Hotel Europa

Hotel EuropaTucked away a few steps from the Prado, this is the best hotel in La Paz. But don’t let the name fool you — Hotel Europa doesn’t have an ounce of European flavor to it. It’s pure nouveau Bolivian. From the free cellphones to the local art displayed in the lobby, it’s clear that this hotel caters to high-class Bolivians who have developed a fondness for modern Florida-style high-rises. Because the hotel is only 8 years old, it knocks its competition (the 30-year-old Radisson Plaza Hotel) out of the water.

The large, cream-colored rooms have fancy green and white carpets, built-in desks, and fresh plants. Mattresses are firm and all beds come with luxurious down comforters. The spacious bathrooms have white tiles and marble sinks. The Hotel Europa is the only hotel in Bolivia to have “floor heating” and a state-of-the-art air-circulation system. The suites are all full apartments with kitchenettes; some even have Jacuzzis. The informal cafeteria serves good local specialties, and there’s live music at the cozy bar on weekend evenings.
